Finance Ministry Positive Over Ghana’s Debt Restructuring In China

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta says his engagement with the Chinese authorities over international debt restructuring has been encouraging.

According to the Minister, he has so far had very positive and encouraging meetings in China.

The tweet from the Ministry pointed out that they are looking forward to securing external assurances very soon.

“So far had very positive and encouraging meetings in China! Looking forward to securing external assurances very soon, even as we pass our outstanding domestic revenue bills back home. Great progress on all fronts…#ResolvingTogether #GhanaFirst,” the Office of the Finance Minister tweeted on Friday, March 24, 2023.

This comes after Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta led a strong government’s delegation to engage the Chinese government on Ghana’s debt restructuring programme.

The Ghana delegation is made up of Technical Officials from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bank of Ghana.

Already, China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed that Ghana’s Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, met with China’s vice commerce minister in Beijing on Thursday to discuss ways of strengthening bilateral economic and trade cooperation. Ghana’s finance ministry revealed that China is the country’s largest bilateral creditor, with debts totaling around US$1.9 billion.
