Mali Sets Poll Date For Return To Democracy

Mali's legislative and presidential elections will be held on 27 February 2022, the transitional government has said.

The country is expected to return to democracy after last year's military coup that ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

The election process will begin with a referendum on 31 October this year and then council elections on 26 December.

A second round of legislative and presidential elections will be held in March 2022 if no candidate gets more than 50% in the first round.

The international community has been calling for a return to democracy after last year's coup.

The military junta behind the coup was dissolved in January 2021 but senior military personnel still hold several key posts in a 25-member transitional government.
