Utility Tariffs Increment: Students Using Electric Stoves For Cooking On UG Campus? - Nana Akomea Amazed

Nana Akomea has slammed the students of the University of Ghana, Legon, for their use of electric stoves to cook food.

According to the Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly called Opanyin Agyekum, the students have resorted to the use of electric stoves to avoid the dangers with using gas on campus.

But the Managing Director of the Intercity State Transport Corporation (STC) isn't enthused about this activity on the UG campus, stressing the behavior of the students is a major contributory factor to the electricity challenges facing Ghanaians.

"Using electricity for cooking? . . . because in their homes they won't do that . . . I agree you say gas is a problem but I don't think it is a good excuse for a university, an academic institution . . . in their homes they won't do that . . . thousands of students in cubcles with everyone using stoves and it is also free . . . " Nana Akomea wondered.

This is because the school's electricity bills are paid by government which invariably means the students use free electricity.

Nana Akomea advised the University authorities to stop the students from using electric stoves and resort to gas, asserting it is far cheaper to use gas.

He urged them to opt for bio-digesters by turning the waste on campus into gas and distribute for the cooking of food.

"This system of thousands and thousands of students cooking with electricity is not sustainable . . . today, as we talk, the government is paying a lot of money for students to cook; a lot of money . . . it's not good. It doesn't befit you; it's an eyesore."
