2024 Elections: How Strange Is My Findings? - Prof. Smart Sarpong Replies Critics on His Latest Polls

Professor Smart Sarpong, a Senior Researcher at the Kumasi Technical University, has come under intense criticisms following his research survey that resulted in the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia leading John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the polls.

The Vice President Dr. Bawumia, according to Prof. Smart Sarpong's research, received a massive endorsement by the people of Ghana to become their next President although the difference in the results between him and Mr. Mahama were very slim.

In the poll which was conducted in real time with Prof. Sarpong and his team moving directly to the citizens to solicit their candid opinions and decision-making in the choice of Ghana’s President in 2025 and with a total sample size of 59,547 voters, 23,432 eligible Ghanaians representing 38.9% said Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is their preferred President-to-be.

Mr. John Dramani Mahama came second on the survey table by having 21,237 representing 36.1% willing to vote for him.

The other candidates fell short of the votes that will be any competitive to these two candidates, hence the survey indicated that only 2,114 people noted they will vote for the other contestants.

After these results went viral following media reports, Prof. Smart Sarpong has been branded an "pro-NPP puppet" while others label his work as skewed to favor the ruling party.

He has also become a victim of social media trolls with some known and anonymous characters raining invectives on him.

Responding to the trolls and tantrums, Prof. Smart Sarpong has justified his works stating emphatically that he is a researcher who does his research work professionally.

He shared his professionalism saying, "I don't have any direct interest. In fact, my previous elections, I've done four major press conferences which are regularly made open".

He noted that his current survey which has stirred controversies were equally done without malicious intent nor ulterior motives.

"In this current report of mine, I have penned down my data on the constituency level because that is the unit...I've written it including my email address and all my particulars for any person who wants further details provided you are a candidate or a party Chairman, somebody I can identify, I can share with you for your own interrogation.

"I've all this disclosure and readiness to be transparent. I plead that what they should do is to simply study the report," he reacted on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show.

"Is that not what has been the case since 1992? How strange is this finding?", Prof. Sarpong queried his critics.
